چکیده

Partial differential equation (PDE) models are commonly used to model complex dynamic systems in applied sciences such as biology and finance. The forms of these PDE models are usually proposed by experts based on their prior knowledge and understanding of the dynamic system. Parameters in PDE models often have interesting scientific interpretations, but their values are often unknown, and need to be estimated from the measurements of the dynamic system in the present of measurement errors. Most PDEs used in practice have no analytic solutions, and can only be solved with numerical methods. Currently, methods for estimating PDE parameters require repeatedly solving PDEs numerically under thousands of candidate parameter values, and thus the computational load is high. In this article, we propose two methods to estimate parameters in PDE models: a parameter cascading method and a Bayesian approach. In both methods, the underlying dynamic process modeled with the PDE model is represented via basis function expansion. For the parameter cascading method, we develop two nested levels of optimization to estimate the PDE parameters. For the Bayesian method, we develop a joint model for data and the PDE, and develop a novel hierarchical model allowing us to employ Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques to make posterior inference. Simulation studies show that the Bayesian method and parameter cascading method are comparable, and both outperform other available methods in terms of estimation accuracy. The two methods are demonstrated by estimating parameters in a PDE model from LIDAR data.

The use of radial basis functions by variable shape parameter for solving partial differential equations

In this paper, some meshless methods based on the local Newton basis functions are used to solve some time dependent partial differential equations. For stability reasons, used variably scaled radial kernels for constructing Newton basis functions. The new implicit finite difference scheme for two-sided space-time fractional partial differential equation

Fractional order partial differential equations are generalizations of classical partial differential equations. Increasingly, these models are used in applications such as fluid flow, finance and others. In this paper we examine some practical numerical methods to solve a class of initial- boundary value fractional partial differential equations with variable coefficients on a finite domain. S...

Parameter Estimation for Partial Differential Equations by Collage-Based Numerical Approximation

The inverse problem of using measurements to estimate unknown parameters of a system often arises in engineering practice and scientific research. This paper proposes a Collage-based parameter inversion framework for a class of partial differential equations. The Collage method is used to convert the parameter estimation inverse problem into a minimization problem of a function of several varia...

Generalized sensitivity functions for size-structured population models

Abstract. Size-structured population models provide a popular means to mathematically describe phenomena such as bacterial aggregation, schooling fish, and planetesimal evolution. For parameter estimation, generalized sensitivity functions (GSFs) provide a tool that quantifies the impact of data from specific regions of the experimental domain. These functions help identify the most relevant da...

Simulating and Forecasting OPEC Oil Price Using Stochastic Differential Equations

The main purpose of this paper is to provide a quantitative analysis to investigate the behavior of the OPEC oil price. Obtaining the best mathematical equation to describe the price and volatility of oil has a great importance. Stochastic differential equations are one of the best models to determine the oil price, because they include the random factor which can apply the effect of different ...
